Return to Office Life & Desk Chairs

With more and more of us returning to some version of office life over the next few months (or maybe you never left!), here’s a guide to translating the best habit and practices of working from home to your new office routine.

1. Get up and take a productivity break

You can drastically lower your risk of heart disease by moving around for a few minutes every 45 to 60 minutes. Each time you get up and start moving around, you start engaging your joints, your muscles and your blood flow starts to increase.

One thing to help settle the mental state and create calm is to keep moving regularly throughout the workday. It’ll also help counteract the negative side effects of sitting at an office desk all day. Why not grab a coffee, discuss something with a co-worker or have a 10 min walk around the office or outdoors - it’ll increase both your productivity and overall wellness.

2.  Concentrate on your breath

The other thing that is really important on returning to an office environment is breathwork. It might sound crazy but when you're in a stressful environment, your whole breathing mechanism is distorted. All the muscles in your neck, back, and shoulders tense up and that affects how you breathe. If you start to become more aware of the fact that stress is causing your breath to become shallow or less, there are certain things you can do to help that.

Our founder, Milena Jaksic recommends 'Consciously breathing in for four seconds through our nose, hold for four and breathe out for four out through our mouth. This will reduce stress and as a result neck/back pain due to the tension you may be holding in your shoulders.’

3. Perfect your Posture

Sitting at an office desk all day can lead to severe back and neck pain. Being more aware of how posture affects your breathing will reduce these aches and pains from long periods of sedentary.

Stretching over forward, then side to side and then sitting up straight, pulling our shoulders back which will also move our ribs up and out will help stimulate our breathing by giving our lungs more room to expand - can you feel the difference when you take a deep breath in?
